About Us

We only publish novel excerpts.

Some magazines and journals take excerpts, but they want them twisted and crammed into the shape of a short story.

We're dedicated to real excerpts that feel like they come from novels we want to read -- they may pop us into the action and leave us hanging at the end.

Each issue includes 5 winning novel excerpts from our contest across a variety of styles and genres.

Our Team

Founding Editor
Hardy Griffin knows what it means to force excerpts of a novel into a short story format for recognition, as excerpts from his forthcoming novel, Broken Kismet, have been published in fresh.ink  and New Flash Fiction; the novel has also won the Eyelands Book Awards grand prize. His short stories appear in Aesthetica Magazine, Alimentum, and have been finalists for the 2019 Narrative Winter Prize, the Tucson Book Festival, and the ScreenCraft Cinematic Short Story contest. His writing has appeared in The Washington Post, Assisi, American Letters & Commentary, and he authored the chapter, "Voice: The Sound of a Story" in Writing Fiction: The Practical Guide from Gotham Writer's Workshop (Bloomsbury).

Editor
Stephanie Johnson grew up in Toledo, Ohio but ended up taking the most circuitous route possible to Sydney Australia, where she writes poetry and speculative fiction while living with type 1 diabetes. Her work has been featured in Witty Partition, Authora Australis, Orion’s Belt, force/fields, and numerous other publications. Stephanie was a 2022 judge for NYC Midnight and is currently working on her first full length science fiction novel.
